seeking special education services

Is your student struggling in school? Does your student get bad grades or have trouble understanding their homework?  Does the school call you to come pick up your student early due to behavior or is your student often suspended or written up for bad behavior? Does your student have trouble paying attention? Has your student been diagnosed with a learning disability or other disability? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, your child may need to be evaluated for special education services. Every student is unique and so are special education services. The steps for getting special education services can be long and confusing, let Burnett Law, LLC help you through the process.

Student Discipline Issues

When a student is out of school they miss valuable instruction time. When a student is out of school for many days in a row they can fall seriously behind in their learning and it can get harder and harder for them to catch up. While discipline is often part of schooling, when discipline is prevents a student from attending class regularly or discipline is occurring without being properly recorded, there may be a bigger problem at hand. Is your student regularly being suspended from school? Has your student been told not to come back to school for one day or more without receiving a suspension notice? Has your student been referred for expulsion? Has the school scheduled an expulsion hearing? Get Burnett Law, LLC and you'll have an advocate on your side who will fight for your student's right to stay in school.

Maintaining an Individualized education Program (IEP)

If your student already gets special education services that means they have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 Plan. These are legal documents that need to be updated every single year. These yearly meetings can be overwhelming and confusing. The school often has lots of people which can make parents feel outnumbered. They may even leave the meeting feeling like they do not know what was decided for their student, which is a helpless feeling. With the representation of Burnett Law, LLC, you can go into these meetings with confidence knowing you have an advocate by your side to help you understand and get your student the services they deserve as they learn, develop, and grow.

Student behavior issues

Do you get regular phone calls home that your student is not behaving? Does the school regularly call you to pick your student up early due to behavior problems? Has your student's teacher complained that your student struggles to pay attention, acts up, has trouble with other students, or any other behavior issue? Behavior issues can often begin to effect a student's learning and grades. But as a parent it can be frustrating trying to figure out why your student is having behavior issues at school. Your student could need a behavior plan or even special education services to help address their behavior. Burnett Law, LLC will work with you and your student to understand what behaviors are a problem at school, where they are coming from, and what services or supports might be appropriate to help your student.

enforcing an individualized education program (IEP)

Even when your student is supposed to be getting special education services through an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 Plan, schools do not always do what they are supposed to. As a parent or guardian, you may feel like the school is not actually providing your student the services or supports they are supposed to be. As a parent or guardian it can be difficult to figure out if the school is doing what they said they would. Burnett Law, LLC can review your student's records and help you work with the school to make sure they are actually providing the services they are supposed to and that those services are meeting your student's needs.

Other education Issues

Don't see the type of support you are looking for? Any issue or event that affects your child's ability to get to school or your child's ability to attend school or your child's ability to participate at school, could be a school law issue. These can be issues like:
